Meeting In Dekalb County on July 22, 2024 to Consider Animal Protection Measures

The DeKalb County Operations (OPS) Committee will meet on Monday, July 22, at 10:00am to consider several animal protection measures, including the GPC’s priority ordinance – a prohibition of the transient and outdoor sales of dogs, cats, and domestic rabbits (e.g., parking lots, roadsides, and flea markets).

DeKalb is a hot spot for illicit, unlicensed pet sales by reckless backyard breeders operating in unregulated locations. The ordinance provides an easy tool for law enforcement that any city or county in Georgia can enact and enforce.

Four counties (Athens-Clarke, Hall, Forsyth, and unincorporated Fulton) and three cities (Johns Creek, Gainesville, and Royston) have passed the ordinance within the past two years.
